Paperwork in another language or currency

Foreign paperwork is translated into English and labeled. Amounts and readings stay as printed, and the car's totals convert to dollars and miles.

Invoices and service booklets in other languages, Japanese booklets included, go in like any other record. The title, summary, work lines and notes are written in English and labeled machine-translated wherever they appear, with the redacted original beside them so anyone can check the wording.

The shop's name, its address and the invoice number are kept exactly as printed. A translated record doesn't reuse the shop's section headings, because a translated heading would be words the shop never printed.

Amounts stay in the currency the invoice printed: euros, yen, or marks and lire on older paperwork. Each record shows its own currency, so it never disagrees with the document beside it.

Anything that adds records together, such as documented spend, yearly totals, spend by category and cost per mile, is in US dollars. Each record is converted at the Federal Reserve's monthly average rate for the month of the service, and totals say when they include converted records. A record no published rate covers stays on the timeline but is left out of the dollar total, and the total says how many were left out.

Odometer readings work the same way. A record printed in kilometers shows kilometers, while totals and the mileage-order check work in miles, so a car that changed odometer units isn't flagged for it.

If the read got the currency or unit wrong, change it on the details step. Neither switch converts anything: they say what the figures already are.

A date like 03/04/2021 is 3 April in most of the world and March 4 in the US. Vinfirm reads it the way the invoice's country writes dates, converts Japanese era years, and asks you to check any date that could be read either way.

Personal details are boxed automatically on typed text in English, the major European languages and Japanese. On handwriting and other alphabets, you place the boxes yourself.
